What is Extended Reality (xR)
xR is short term for Extended Reality and Virtual Production. It is a method of capturing a performer or presenter in a virtual environment without the need for post-production.
Time and place have no boundaries in extended reality. From the highest mountains to the deepest oceans with the sun permanently suspended at golden hour. Any environment can be built and mapped on the xR stage for real-time captures.
Our xR technology from Disguise features multi-camera rendering, set extensions, and ultra-fast processing. Our Mosys tracking system captures real-time full motion cameras, objects, and subjects. The technology allows the single LED stage to be virtually extended in-camera, giving scenes a much larger scope for vast environments.
Lighting in virtual production the LED provides accurate ambient lighting, shadows, and reflections without the need for post-production. Performers on stage are immersed and naturally interact with the surrounding without the need to visualize imaginary scenes.
Frequenty Asked Questions
WHAT DOES xR STAND FOR?
xR stands for Extended Reality and it is the technology that allows the merging of virtual scenes with the real world using technology such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) for live production environments to create fully immersive experiences.
WHAT DOES THE WORKFLOW LOOK LIKE?
In xR production, a pre-configured 3D virtual environment generated by the graphics engine is displayed on high-quality LED screens as background for live-action real world environment. Combined with a precision camera tracking system, cameras are able to move around the virtual environment, with the real and virtual elements seamlessly merged and locked together creating the combined illusion.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF xR PRODUCTION?
Actors performing in an LED screen that is displaying the virtual environment helps immersion in that reality. The natural sightlines of scenery and objects help the performer react more instinctive as opposed to following directions.
WHAT ABOUT LIGHT SETUP FOR xR?
Lighting is provided by the LED screens on an xR set. This helps real-world people and objects blend seamlessly into virtual environments, and further reduces time on set adjusting lighting.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A xR SCREEN OVER A GREEN SCREEN?
Green-screen requires certain lighting conditions and this can be restricting. With xR production the ambient light from the LED screens creates a more natural lighting environment and eliminates the need for post-production.
